Supervisee in Social Work
Scott Foor, MSW
Helping tweens, teens, and young adults manage anxiety, depression, and stress with therapy that includes a nerdy twist.
Meet Scott.
I facilitate the Dungeons & Dragons therapy groups at We Thrive Together — for teens and for adults.
I believe some of the most meaningful growth happens not in a one-on-one therapy room but in a room full of people doing something together. For a lot of the people I work with — teens navigating anxiety and social stress, adults feeling disconnected or stuck — traditional group formats don't land. Sitting in a circle and talking about feelings isn't where they find their footing.
D&D is.
Collaborative storytelling and role-play create a kind of side-by-side connection that feels safer and more natural for people who have always felt more at home in imaginative worlds than in conventional social spaces. The emotions we explore through the game are real. The skills we build — emotional regulation, frustration tolerance, communication, teamwork — transfer directly into everyday life.
Our groups are structured and clinically grounded, using the Geek Therapeutics framework. They are also genuinely fun. Those two things are not in conflict.
Teen D&D Group — for teens navigating anxiety, social stress, and the particular challenge of figuring out who you are and where you belong.
Adult D&D Group — for adults navigating anxiety, depression, or social disconnection who find that doing something side by side feels more accessible than sitting face to face.
If you or your teen have ever felt like therapy wasn't designed for people like you — these groups might be exactly what you have been looking for.
My Background & Approach
I earned my Bachelor’s degree from the University of Virginia’s College at Wise and my Master’s degree in Social Work from the University of Pittsburgh. My professional journey began as a mentor for at risk youth, which sparked my passion for helping young people feel seen and supported. I’ve since worked in a pediatric psychiatric hospital, an intensive outpatient program specializing in OCD, and with Prince William County Community Services, where I supported youth and families through an Intensive In-Home Program. Across these roles, I’ve seen how powerful therapy can be when young people feel truly understood and how emotional safety opens the door to growth and change. My approach is trauma-informed, attachment aware, and developmentally attuned. I integrate evidence-based methods including: Cognitive Behavioral Therapy - CBT, Exposure and Response Prevention - ERP, Dialectical Behavior Therapy - DBT, Internal Family Systems - IFS. All therapy begins with stage one trauma-informed work, focused on safety, emotional regulation, and stabilization.
Geek-Affirming Therapy & Creative Approaches
What makes my work unique is how I intentionally integrate geek and nerd culture into the therapeutic process. For many clients, video games, comics, anime, fantasy, sci-fi, and tabletop role playing games are places of meaning, regulation, and identity, not distractions. In therapy, we may use: Superhero and story metaphors, role-playing and narrative exploration, gaming and fandom frameworks, creative problem-solving and imagination. These approaches help make therapy more engaging and accessible, especially for clients who don’t connect with traditional talk therapy. Through fictional narratives and role play, we can safely explore real emotions, inner conflicts, and strengths in a way that feels empowering. I am currently pursuing advanced training and certification in Geek Therapy and Dialectical Behavior Therapy to continue deepening this work.
